Christ’s Message to the Seven Churches: To the Church in Ephesus
August 23, 2020 (Sunday AM)
Bible Text: Revelation 2:1-7 |
Intro: In verses 2-3, of this letter, Jesus encourages the Church in Ephesus but in verse 4, on the heels of His encouragement to them, He tells them that He holds something against them: they had forsaken/neglected their first (Gk. "primary") love. They were a busy church, but had neglected what was most important. Jesus tells them how they can get it back.
I. Remember (v. 4 - look how far you've fallen).
II. Repent (v.5 - change your old way of thinking, turn away from your old sinful behavior, change direction and turn to Christ). *Jesus says, "repent or I will remove your lampstand from its place." Which essentially means, the church will lose its ability to shed the light of truth. We are called to let our light shine for all to see!
III. Return (v.5 - (Go back to the place of your first love when Jesus was everything to you).
Conclusion: If you've been neglecting the love of God and have lost sight of His love for you, there's hope. If you've lost your first love, Jesus shows you the way back to Him. He's saying: Remember, Repent, and Return. What is the Holy Spirit saying to you through this message? What will you do about it?
