Bible Text: Revelation 2:8-11 |

Intro: Smyrna is the only city mentioned in the seven churches of Revelation that's still in existence today. It's now called, Izmir (in modern day Turkey). It's also only one of two (of the seven churches listed) for which Jesus has no correction, only encouragement- the other is the Church of Philadelphia. Sadly, this church faced severe persecution. The name Smyrna means myrrh, the fragrance of which is released by crushing. Here is a church being crushed through persecution. Jesus encouraged them to faithful- even if it meant death and He would give them the crown of life. Jesus knew what they were dealing with. V.9 - He knew their persecution, their poverty- yet He says that they're rich, and He knew how they were being slandered. To help them to go through all of this, He tells the church of Smyrna four important things to strengthen them in their persecution:

I. He reminds them of Who He is (v.9)

II. Don't afraid of what you are about to suffer- I know what you're going through (v.10)

III. It's only for a limited time (v. 10)

IV. Be faithful to the end- Endure (v.10)

Conclusion: Outwardly, this church "had nothing at all." Their poverty was extensive, yet Jesus says they're spiritually rich. He was their greatest treasure! Like this church, may the promises of Jesus cause us to cling to Him- even in persecution. Be committed to the end. What is the Holy Spirit saying to you through this message? What will you do about it?
