Bible Text: Matthew 5:13-16 |

INTRO:  In the Beatitudes, Jesus was describing Christian character.  He then goes on to use these two illustrations to show what this character means in everyday life.  Using the images of salt and light, Jesus gives us some valuable insights into what it means to live as a Christian in this world.

 I.    You Are Salt

> When we trust in Jesus Christ as Savior, we are salt and light.

- We are not to be a part of ungodliness.

- When salt is pure, it doesn’t lose its saltiness.

- When salt is mixed with other things, it can lose its saltiness.

> There are people in our lives who are salt for us.

- Salt creates thirst.

- We have a thirst for what they have in their lives.

> We bring Jesus to the nations as a cleanser, to draw out the evil of the world.

- Salt is a cleanser.

> We don’t want to be overly salty.

- We don’t want to be judgmental, “hit people over the head” with the Bible.

- We don’t want to be pushy or spiritually prideful.

- When we take it to the extreme, it leaves a bad taste.

> Salt is hidden; it works secretly.

- Our conduct is obvious, but our character is hidden.

- The influence of a Christian character is hidden but penetrating.

> If we lose our saltiness, we are foolish.

- If we don’t live as Christians, we won’t make people thirsty for what is within us.

- Our behavior can prove us to be hypocrites when we live the same as everyone else.

 II.   You Are Light

> We are light:  “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Live as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).

- “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

- If the light of God is in us, we shine that light.

- People see our light by our behavior.

- You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness (1 Thessalonians 5:5).

> If we hate a brother or sister in Christ, the light of God is not in us.

- “They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts” (Ephesians 4:18).

- When we are in a dark room, all it takes is a small light for us to see.

> We need to let people see Christ in us.

- We are shown the way through the Word.

- We need to let the light of Christ flow through us to those around us.

III.  The Warning

> We can lose our saltiness.

- We can dim our light.

- We will be rejected by both camps when we compromise our lifestyle.

- We will be unfit for service to the Lord.

- If we’re talking like a Christian but not living the life of a Christian, we lose our usefulness for the Lord.

> God loves us in spite of who we are.

- We can’t lose who we are, but we can lose what we have been given.

> We need to be Jesus with skin on, and let His light shine through in our lives.

- It is not to bring glory to us; it is to bring glory to the Father.

- When we live as salt and light, we bring glory to Jesus.

- Our reward will be great in heaven.

INTRO:  God desires that His people be salt and light in this dark world of decay.  You may be asking yourself, what can a little salt do to influence the world?  What good is a little candle in such a dark world?  One light, one candle can make a big difference!  Be salt and light for the praise and glory of God.
