Bible Text: Romans 4:1–5 |

INTRO:  There’s a lot of confusion among Christians about righteousness.  Some say that we are righteous because of our good works, and others say our righteousness comes by faith apart from our works.  Today we’ll look at what the Bible says about righteousness - what it means to be in right standing with God.

 I.    What is righteousness? (2 Corinthians 5:21)

> Righteousness is right standing with God, being right with God.

- Our righteousness comes from our position, not from our performance.

- Our position is that our heart is for Jesus.

- If we do something unrighteous, our righteousness before God does not become null.

- We can believe we are damaged goods when we stumble.

- We have all fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23).

- All of us have sinned; we are all guilty.

- None of us can boast about how good we are.

- Our goodness can never be good enough.

- We put our faith and trust in the only One who could keep all the Law – Jesus.

- When we live under the grace of Jesus, He declares us righteous.

II.   How is a person made right in God’s eyes? (Romans 4:2-4; Isaiah 64:6)

> Did Abraham earn righteousness?

- He did not; his faith was credited to him as righteousness (Romans 4:2-3).

- We are to do good works; however we are not saved by good works (Ephesians 2:8-10).

- We do good works because we are going to heaven.

- Our reward is in heaven when we do good works.

- We let our light shine through these works and give glory to God in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

> Our “account” with God is filled with righteousness through Jesus, not because of what we do.

- Our righteousness is as filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6).

- There are people who will “nitpick” our righteousness.

- They remind us of who we have been and our past sin.

- The blood of Jesus washes away our sin; He removes it.

III.  What are the works of the righteous? (John 6:28–29)

> The work of God is this:  to believe in the One He sent.

- Our faith is not based on religion but on a relationship with the Lord.

- Our righteousness is based upon our faith and trust in the Lord.

- Our reward is in heaven when we do good works.

- God doesn’t see the sin of believers when He looks at them; He sees Jesus.

- When we believe, God deposits righteousness in our account even though we are not righteous on our own.

CONCLUSION:  We receive God’s gift of righteousness when we believe Jesus died on the cross for our sins.  Jesus’ perfect righteousness keeps us in right standing with God.  When we understand that God saved us for good works - not by good works - we’re empowered to do the right things.  We can be amazed by His grace daily as we live in His righteousness.
