RESPONDING TO THE HOLY SPIRIT – Part 2
INTRO: The Holy Spirit is with us. There are many examples in the Word about what has been said about the voice of God. Our relationship with the Lord is all about intimacy with the Holy Spirit, hearing His voice and listening to what He tells us. Today we will answer four questions that will help us determine whether what we are hearing is from God or from the enemy.
I. Does it go against God’s Word or character?
A. Does whatever you are hearing line up with Scripture?
B. All Scripture is God-inspired (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
1. It is useful to teach us what is true and to correct us.
2. It equips us to do every good work.
3. It is a reflection of God’s thoughts.
C. The Holy Spirit will never say anything contrary to the Word.
1. Reading the Word helps us to know God’s character.
2. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are of one accord; they are one.
II. Does it bring confusion?
A. God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33).
B. The direction of the Holy Spirit will give you peace.
III. Will it cause your faith to increase or decrease?
A. The leading of the Holy Spirit will never cause fear.
B. God does not give us a spirit of fear (2 Timothy 1:7).
IV. Will it please the Lord?
A. Live as children of light which is goodness, righteousness, and truth (Ephesians 5:8-10).
B. We cannot discern the leading of the Holy Spirit when we are following the opinions of people.
C. Seek godly counsel.
D. If we live foolishly, maybe we are following the wrong voice.
1. Sometimes we listen to the wrong voice or advice, and then we blame God for the outcome.
E. Wisdom causes us to prosper.
CONCLUSION: The Holy Spirit speaks gently. When He speaks and we listen, we have peace. If we want to hear His voice, we need to humble ourselves. Choose a time and place to hear Him. Bring something upon which to write; He will speak. Be still before Him; then listen.
